An off-track garage door has one or more rollers out of the track, so the door hangs crooked, jams, or sits partly open on one side. Do not run the opener or force the door: the sections can buckle, cables can unwind and the door can fall. We secure the door first, then work out what pushed it out.
A roller leaves the track for a reason: a vehicle or object strike, a bent or loose track, a cable that snapped or slipped, a broken roller, or wind pushing the door against the vertical track. The repair is rarely just seating the roller. We straighten or replace the damaged track, replace broken rollers and hinges, check the cables and drums, re-seat the rollers and rebalance the door, then test travel and reversal. If a section is creased we say so, because a bent section will pull the rollers out again.
Wind is the local cause. DASMA's sheet on securing garage doors in high wind explains that a closed door catches the wind and pushes against the vertical track, and the top rollers rest in the track's curve, so the force can drive the door upward and out of its guides. It adds that post-Hurricane Andrew studies found many doors had been opened by the storm itself.
