Lift cables carry the door's weight from the bottom corner brackets up to the drums on the torsion shaft, or over pulleys on an extension-spring system. When one frays, snaps or slips off its drum, the door lifts crooked, hangs at an angle or stops partway, and the loaded spring still holds full tension.
That makes a cable job a spring-tension job as well. We secure the door, release the tension in a controlled way, replace both cables as a set, re-seat them in the drums, and rewind to the door's weight. Pulling on a loose cable can swing the bracket and the door with it.
The cable is a rated part. DASMA's cable standard calls for high-carbon or stainless steel wire with a corrosion-resistant coating, and a minimum breaking strength of at least five times the load, so we match the cable to the door instead of using whatever fits the drum. We also look at the drums, bottom brackets and spring ends for the damage that usually caused the failure.
Steel cable is exactly what salt attacks. Amarr says salt spray is harsh on steel garage door components, and DASMA's cable standard requires a corrosion-resistant coating, the layer that wears first near salt water. On the Gulf side of the Panhandle we examine the lower ends of the cables, where moisture collects at the bracket, and the strands near the drum for rust staining, broken wires or flattening before we reuse any hardware.
