A garage door panel, or section, is one horizontal slab of the door, joined to its neighbors by hinges and carrying the track rollers. A section that is cracked, dented across its width, rusted through at the bottom or separated at a joint weakens the door and can bind it in the tracks, so we replace the section instead of patching it.
The first question is whether the replacement exists. Clopay says replacement sections are available while the door model is still in production, and weathering can fade a door so that a new section may not match. If a match is not available, or damage runs across several sections, we say so and talk through replacing the whole door.
Sections also carry structure. DASMA explains that sectional doors designed for wind load rely on reinforcement at specific vertical locations so loads are shared across the door, which is why a new section must carry the same struts and hinge attachments as the old one.
